A family from the community of Los Rodríguez, in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende, remains missing after the flooding caused by the Guadalupe River in Texas, United States. So far, only the eldest son has been found alive.
According to the Guanajuato Human Rights Secretariat, the missing persons are Leonardo Romero and his wife, Natalia Venzor, both U.S. citizens, as well as their two-year-old son, also an American citizen. Their eldest son, 18, was found with minor injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The family has resided in the United States for more than 20 years. Following instructions from Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, the migrant assistance protocol was activated, and contact is being maintained with their families through the San Antonio Liaison Office, reported Human Rights Secretary Liz Esparza Frausto.
Gustavo Romero, Leonardo’s brother, confirmed in an interview with Telediario that they are continuing the search for his relatives and reported that they have begun receiving extortion calls from Mexican numbers. “They’ve been sending us photos and saying they have our relatives, but we believe they’re just playing a game. That’s why we’re not answering calls from Mexico,” he stated.
Despite being in contact with Mexican authorities, the Romero family ruled out repatriation proceedings, given that the missing family members are US citizens. “My brother isn’t going to go to Mexico. Our entire family is here,” Gustavo stated.
The state government is coordinating with the Mexican Consulate and migrant organizations to provide humanitarian aid and raise financial support for the victims of the Guanajuato community affected by the disaster.
