With the aim of generating legislative proposals in favor of the rights of the LGBTTIQ+ community, the First Legislative Forum “Friendships in Congress” was held in the Durango State Congress. The event was led by Representative Delia Enríquez Arriaga and brought together representatives from the three branches of government, activists, and members of civil society.
During the forum, legislative progress was presented and a space was opened for the participation of activists from Gómez Palacio, Tlahualilo, and Durango City, who shared experiences and highlighted pending issues on the rights agenda. AdChoices ADVERTISEMENT
Representative Enríquez reported that, since the administrative decree allowing same-sex marriage went into effect in 2022, more than 330 same-sex marriages have been celebrated in the state.
A constitutional reform initiative on substantive equality was also presented, which contemplates the explicit recognition of gender identity, gender expression, and sexual characteristics within the state legal framework.
“The right not to be discriminated against must be guaranteed by the Constitution,” Enríquez stated during his speech.
The forum was considered by those attending as an unprecedented event, as it was the first time the State Congress had opened an official space to directly hear from members of the LGBTTIQ+ community and develop joint proposals.
