A foreign tourist was filmed urinating in the middle of Chapultepec Park and confronted by a young Mexican woman, in an incident that has already sparked outrage on social media. The video, shared on TikTok by user @holasoyreich, immediately went viral.
In the approximately 48-second recording, the man admits he urinates in public because “I don’t have money for a public bathroom. I have credit cards.” The young woman firmly responds, “Sorry?” questioning his justification.
She was also forceful in her comments: “They’re not going to come to our country and do whatever they want and think that because they’re foreigners, the laws don’t apply to them. Fortunately, we saw a police officer and immediately notified him so they could be fined.”
Possible fine under Mexico City law
According to articles 29, 31, and 32 of the Mexico City Civic Culture Law, urinating in public places such as gardens, parks, or roads constitutes a type B infraction. Penalties include:
A fine of 11 to 40 UMA (MXN 1,244.54–4,525.60 in 2025)
Arrest for 13 to 24 hours
Community service for 6 to 12 hours
Although it is still unknown whether the tourist faced any formal consequences, local authorities could apply any of these measures.
The incident intensifies the debate about the conduct of foreign visitors in Mexico. In the viral video, one internet user noted: “If a Latino does that in the US, he’ll go to jail.” Other users praised the young woman’s courage for facing the situation, while some criticized the man’s justification.
