U.S. Vice Consul to Mexico dies in traffic accident

A U.S. diplomatic official died in a traffic accident in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, state authorities announced Thursday.

Brian Matthew Faughnan, vice consul of the U.S. Consulate General in the northern city of Monterrey, died Wednesday when the vehicle he was traveling in overturned on a highway in the municipality of Matamoros, the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office reported.

The U.S. consulate confirmed the official’s death in a statement posted Thursday on its Facebook page.

Authorities have not provided an update on the cause of the accident. Local media reported that the diplomat’s car went out of control and left the road before overturning.
