Marc Spiegel, president of Innovatio Capital, the new owner of the Gallos Blancos del Querétaro in Liga MX, made history in Mexican soccer by injecting significant U.S. capital into the national football system.
The fund acquired Querétaro from Grupo Caliente (and thus ends this multi-ownership, as the same group operates the Xolos de Tijuana). The man behind Innovatio Capital has a significant investment history and, in fact, also has a significant sporting past, but above all, a future in soccer that deserves attention.
WHO IS MARC SPIEGEL, THE BUSINESSMAN WHO BOUGHT QUERÉTARO IN LIGA MX?
Born in Louisville, United States, Marc Spiegel graduated twice from the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He has always had strong ties to his hometown, even though he doesn’t live there full-time. ADVERTISEMENT
He was a scholarship student for a AAA baseball team and, after a while, moved into the team’s communications department. Once he had some capital under his belt, he provided support to athletes at the University of Louisville, and he was also a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
His fortune arose from trash… literally. Marc Spiegel co-founded Rubicon, a company specializing in data analysis and logistics for better management of garbage and other waste collection. It specializes in identifying and addressing inefficiencies that are often overlooked.
This isn’t the first time Marc Spiegel has tried to venture into sports. It was even reported in the past that he had an opportunity to invest in Charlton Athletic in England, although the deal fell through.
In an interview with Forbes, Spiegel said that more than 200 investments were analyzed worldwide (many of them sports-related), but Liga MX and Querétaro represented a very attractive bet.
