The United States has begun construction of a new “secondary” wall on its southwestern border with Mexico to reinforce the steel fence that divides the two countries.
The approximately 11-kilometer wall began construction this Wednesday in the state of New Mexico and is part of a plan to close “critical” gaps in the border and improve security operations, according to a statement released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
In June, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem granted new waivers for the construction of approximately 58 kilometers of new border wall in Arizona and New Mexico.
Border Patrol apprehended 39,677 immigrants in the El Paso sector, which includes El Paso and Hudspeth counties in Texas and all of New Mexico, in the fiscal year through April, a 78% decrease from the previous period.
