The head of the Foreign Ministry’s North American unit, Roberto Velasco, assured that the Mexicans detained at the center known as Alligator Alcatraz are not experiencing overcrowding or isolation.
Through social media, he explained that Mexican representatives in the United States will be conducting daily visits to the Mexicans to provide consular and legal assistance and ensure their rights are respected.
“The @ConsulmexMia Consular Protection team visited the Alcatraz detention center in the Everglades yesterday and interviewed the detained Mexicans. They report that, at the time of the visit, no overcrowding or isolation was detected,” he stated.
Last Tuesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that 14 Mexicans were detained at Alligator Alcatraz. In her morning press conference, she explained that the government is seeking to repatriate them.
And he recalled that a diplomatic note was sent to ensure that no Mexican national has to be held in this detention center.
In this context, Velasco mentioned that the consulate in Miami is carrying out the necessary efforts to promptly repatriate Mexicans who so choose, thus preventing them from spending any further time in this detention center.
