The second case of screwworm in a dog was confirmed in the state of Yucatán, after animal rescuers confirmed the presence of this parasite in a dog named “Dingo,” who was found abandoned in the municipality of Tetiz.

This second case of screwworm in dogs was confirmed by veterinarians in Mérida, who treated “Dingo” for a series of injuries. After examining, treating, and analyzing the puppy, the specialists determined it was another case of this pest that primarily affects livestock.

“The first cleaning was done at the vet. From there, we went to another vet with a specialist. She was hospitalized for three days. When I went to pick her up, they gave me a prescription so I could care for her at home and gave me the medical report stating that she was ‘positive for cattle screwworm,’” Alejandra Noh, an independent rescuer, told Unotv.com. She was the one who saved “Dingo” from the streets and got him medical attention.

The dog is currently under medical observation, waiting for his recovery with veterinary care.

Yucatan adds 58 cases of screwworms

With the confirmation of “Dingo’s” case, Yucatán now has 58 confirmed cases of animals affected by the screwworm in 18 different municipalities, said the state’s Secretary of Rural Development, Edgardo Medina.

Medina assured that, regarding the screwworm, the authorities “are always working preventively, always trying to stay one step ahead.”

Hernán Bermúdez Requena is identified as a suspected member of a criminal network, and his image is being circulated by Interpol.
The official also urged everyone to remain vigilant for the symptoms caused by this parasite, especially in livestock.

“We continue to be proactive and vigilant, checking the animals upon entering the corral, and if we see any wounds, applying Negasunt powder, placing a small bag on them, removing the worm, putting it in a bottle, and performing the analysis.”
