With the Belize national cycling team participating and an estimated purse of 250,000 pesos, the fourth edition of the Yucatán Summer Classic, one of the largest events organized on the Peninsula, will be held with 350 cyclists in attendance.
The race, on Sunday, August 3, will start at 6:00 a.m. and will feature a new route: the start and finish will be at the “Víctor Cervera Pacheco” Sports Complex in Progreso, in front of “El Corchito.”
“This event has already become a classic despite its short history. This edition will be the best we’ve ever held. We wish everyone who participates the same. We’ve done well because it’s highly anticipated, and that’s why this year will be even more challenging,” said Jalil Escalante, representative of the organizing committee.
The categories offered are Under-23 and Elite, both covering a distance of 120 kilometers; Master A, for ages 40 to 49; Masters B, for ages 50 to 59, with 100 kilometers; Masters C, for ages 60 and up, with 80 kilometers; women’s freestyle, with 100 kilometers, as well as MTB in both categories with 60 kilometers.
“The event has generated a lot of interest among cyclists; we already have more than 60 registered, and we expect the Belize national team to participate, as well as participants from Nuevo León, Mexico City, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, and we hope to reach 400.”
The winner of the freestyle event will receive 15,000 pesos, the second-place finisher 12,000, and the third-place finisher 9,000. The Masters A and women’s categories will receive 8, 6, and 3,000 pesos; the B category will receive 5, 3, and 2, and the remaining categories will receive 3, 2,500, and 1,000 pesos.
