The Mexico City Ministry of the Environment (SEDEMA) reports that, during the unveiling ceremony of the commemorative Superior Lottery ticket dedicated to Xin Xin, the only giant panda in Latin America, Secretary Julia Álvarez Icaza Ramírez and the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Mexico, Chen Daojiang, underscored the value of the Conservation Center as a space for environmental protection, research, and education.

They also emphasized that its extraordinary longevity is achieved thanks to the meticulous care and constant affection that the Conservation Center staff has provided for decades. They expressed their respect to the Mexico City government, the Conservation Center team, and all those who have accompanied Xin Xin:

“Allow me to express my most sincere respect and deep gratitude to the Mexico City government, the team of caretakers at the Conservation Center, and all the friends who have cared for Xin Xin with such care and love.”

She reaffirmed that both countries share a deep commitment to biodiversity conservation and the construction of an ecological civilization. “China and Mexico are two megadiverse countries that have collaborated closely in protecting nature and promoting green development,” she noted, while expressing her country’s willingness to continue strengthening bilateral ties for the benefit of future generations.

For her part, Julia Álvarez Icaza, Secretary of the Environment in Mexico City, emphasized that the Conservation Center not only protects endangered species but also “transforms consciences” by introducing children and young people to science, empathy, and respect for all forms of life.

“Taking care of Xin Xin for 35 years is also caring for hope, for the legacy we leave for future generations,” she noted, acknowledging the interdisciplinary work of the veterinary, biological, and technical staff at the Chapultepec Wildlife Conservation Center, as well as the continuity of a public policy that places biodiversity at its core.

Both speakers agreed that Xin Xin’s story is a living testament to international cooperation, environmental diplomacy, and the construction of a shared ecological civilization, where science, culture, and social participation converge to protect life and strengthen ties between Mexico and China.

As part of the commemorative activities for Xin Xin’s 35th anniversary, a drawing contest was recently held, in which nearly 300 illustrations were submitted in the children’s, youth, and adult categories. As a token of affection and in recognition of the participants’ creativity, Ambassador Chen Daojiang presented the winners with a stuffed panda representing the honoree.

SEDEMA reiterates its commitment to the protection of biodiversity, environmental education, and the strengthening of public policies that ensure the well-being of species and the right of present and future generations to a healthy environment.
