The weekend is about to begin, but before that, it’s important to note that the potential for thunderstorms will continue in various parts of Mexico throughout Friday.

First, a large trough will continue to form in the afternoon over the interior of the country, which, in interaction with divergence at altitude, will favor precipitation of varying intensity in the north, northeast, northwest, west, center, east, south, and southeast of Mexico.

Similarly, another trough over the Yucatan Peninsula and the southeast of the country, coupled with a cyclonic circulation in the upper troposphere, will generate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the areas described.

In this regard, very heavy rains (50 to 75 mm) are forecast in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, and heavy rains (25 to 50 mm) in Chihuahua, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, and Tlaxcala.

In addition, moderate rains (5 to 25 mm) are expected in Sinaloa, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Hidalgo, and light rains (less than 5 mm) in Coahuila, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato. Take precautions for possible hail, intense electrical activity, squalls, severe flooding, and rapidly rising rivers.

A strong regional pressure gradient will favor gusts of 50 to 70 km/h (31 to 43 mph) in Baja California and Baja California Sur, where dust storms are not ruled out. Furthermore, significant temperature variations between the coast and the interior of the country, as well as expected storms, will lead to winds of 40 to 60 km/h (25 to 37 mph) in Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Durango, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

This Friday afternoon, highs above 45°C are expected in Sonora, 40 to 45°C in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, 35 to 40°C in San Luis Potosí, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, and 30 to 35°C in Zacatecas, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, and Morelos.

Later, early Saturday morning, lows of 5 to 10°C are expected in highland areas of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Michoacán, the State of Mexico, Puebla, and Veracruz.

Storm activity will continue in various parts of the country this Saturday and Sunday, and could even increase further due to the advance of a new tropical wave. Fortunately, the country will remain free of hurricane threats, at least for the next few days. In any case, we will remain vigilant for any changes that may occur.
