Quintana Roo authorities remain silent on triple homicide of taxi drivers

The discovery of three bodies in Playa del Carmen, allegedly those of taxi drivers from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union, has been an issue that the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office has avoided reporting since it occurred.

On Friday the 18th, the discovery of three bodies abandoned on the side of Federal Highway 307, in front of the Nickelodeon Hotel, in the heart of the Riviera Maya, north of this municipality, was reported.

Local media reported that the bodies showed signs of torture and were apparently drivers from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi drivers’ union, who had been reported missing days earlier by the same Attorney General’s Office.

Five days before the triple homicide, a supervisor from the same taxi drivers’ union was executed in the In House neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.

For this crime, on July 14, State Attorney Raciel López Salazar said there are two lines of investigation: drug dealing and land invasion.

However, following the discovery of the bodies—which has been classified as a triple homicide—he has decided to remain silent.

On July 21, Raciel López Salazar led the press conference of the Quintana Roo Security Roundtable. He was accompanied by Secretary of Government Cristina Torres Gómez and Secretary of Citizen Security Julio César Gómez.

At no point did the officials address this crime. On the contrary, López Salazar maintained that during the first half of the year there was a 52% reduction in intentional homicides compared to the same half of 2024.

Likewise, Luis Herrera Quiam, general secretary of the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi drivers’ union, has also remained silent regarding the case, which they claim is detrimental to his own members.

Herrera Quiam also serves as general secretary of the Playa del Carmen city council. In Quintana Roo, the three main taxi unions, located in Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancún, both members and some leaders, have been implicated in alleged illicit activities, leading to arrests. This is the case of Salomón Alfonso Muñoz, who, while a leader of the Andrés Quintana Roo union, was charged with homicide.
