Mérida appears for the first time in the national ranking of Mexico’s most unsafe cities in 2025, with a notable increase in the perception of insecurity. The figure rose from 22% in 2022 to 41.9% in 2025, placing it 69th out of 91 cities evaluated. This places Mérida among the 5% most unsafe municipalities in the country.

Key data on insecurity in Mérida

According to recent data from INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography) and the National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU):

The homicide rate in Mérida is 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The percentage of extortion in homes is 12.6%.
The overall perception of insecurity reached 41.9% in the municipality.
This increase reflects growing public concern about crime, which is still lower than in other cities with higher rates, but marks an important change for Mérida, historically considered one of the safest cities in the country.

This phenomenon is part of a national trend in which 63.2% of the population over 18 years of age considers it unsafe to live in their city, with crime rates being particularly high in states and municipalities with serious violence problems.

While in other cities…

Compared to other highly unsafe cities such as Villahermosa (95.3%), Uruapan (92.5%), and Culiacán (90.6%), Mérida has a lower rate, but its increase requires the attention of authorities to prevent a worsening of crime rates.
