The Mexican delegation returns home with the country’s best-ever World Cup result. With broken records and a decisive performance by Osmar Olvera against Chinese dominance, the team collected eight medals at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships: one gold, four silver, and three bronze. After 23 days of competition in Singapore, Mexico finished 12th in the overall medal standings, tied with Japan. China took first place with 15 golds, followed by Australia and the United States.
The absolute star was 21-year-old Olvera, who was recognized as the best diver of the tournament. The Mexico City native, who had tied Joaquín Capilla at the Paris Olympics, became the most successful Mexican in the history of the World Championships with eight medals, breaking the record for most medals won by a Mexican in a single edition of the tournament. In Singapore, she won four gold medals: gold in the three-meter springboard, silver in the one-meter springboard, in the men’s synchronized diving event with Juan Manuel Celaya, and in the mixed team competition. By winning gold, she broke a two-decade streak for the Chinese in that event. “Mexico isn’t just about football; we’re the best in the world at diving,” she declared.
Gabriela Agúndez and Alejandra Estudillo won silver in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform. Twins Mía and Lía Cueva also made history by taking bronze at the age of 14. Randal Willars closed out Mexico’s performance early Sunday morning with third place in the individual platform event, earning his fifth medal at the world championships. That final marked an unprecedented feat: for the first time since 1982, no Chinese diver made the podium. The gold went to Australian Cassiel Rousseau, and the silver to Ukrainian Oleksil Sereda. In artistic swimming, Diego Villalobos became the first man to compete with the Mexican national team in a World Championship, winning bronze in the technical solo event.
