Biometric CURP: We tell you whether it applies or not in Coahuila and Durango

193

The Unique Population Registry Code (CURP) remains the traditionally known code composed of numbers and letters. However, as its name suggests, it will include biometric data such as fingerprints of both hands; an iris scan; a digital photograph of the holder; and an electronic signature.

This data will be stored in the National Population Registry (RENAPO). It will also feature a QR code for quick access to user information.

The director of the Torreón Convention Center said that this event was “just what was missing” at the site and that the goal is to strengthen the fair.

When will it be available?

Legally, the biometric CURP is already a reality, so the process to obtain it will begin in October of this year. However, its issuance will not be completed until January 2026, and all civil registry offices and designated offices in Mexico are expected to be authorized to issue it by February of that same year.

Will it be mandatory?

The Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB) and RENAPO (National Electoral Registry) have confirmed that this new CURP will not be mandatory; furthermore, issuing it is free of charge. It should be noted that, although some have seen it as a substitute for the voter ID card, this is not the case.

Where does it apply?

The biometric CURP applies to all of Mexico; meaning that the offices that process this documentation in Coahuila and Durango will also have to adapt to carry out the process.

What is required for the process?

Each interested party must present the following documents in original and a copy, and the biometric CURP will be submitted in digital and physical format:

Recent and legible birth certificate
Traditional CURP
Official ID with photo
Proof of address no older than three months
In the case of minors, the official ID will be that of their father, mother, or guardian.
As mentioned above, having one is not mandatory, but it has practical benefits for citizens. Its purpose is to streamline identification processes, reduce identity theft, and improve the accuracy of official databases.
