Durango becomes the heart of Mexican chronicle writing after being declared the National Capital at the start of the 47th National Congress of Chroniclers of Mexican Communities and Cities (ANACCIM). At the opening ceremony, Mayor Bonifacio Herrera presented the “Israel Cavazos Garza” and “Renan Irigoyen Rosado” awards to renowned chroniclers José Román and Armando Fuentes Aguirre “Catón.”

In his welcome message, Bonifacio Herrera expressed that Durango feels fortunate to welcome the chroniclers, “because the history of their communities resides in each one.” He also expressed his gratitude for the distinction of being named the National Capital of Chronicle Writing.

Javier Guerrero, a chronicler from Durango, delivered the inaugural address for the Congress, acknowledging the support of the Municipal Government in the 119 presentations that unite the work of local and national chroniclers with the goal of preserving the collective memory and honoring the historical legacy of each region.

Representing the State Government, David Payán, Secretary of Welfare, described Durango as “a hidden gem in the north of the country, with natural wealth and the identity of its people, building a future with historical pride.” He added that this gathering reaffirms Durango as a guardian of history and chroniclers as defenders of the collective memory.

Rafael Alberto González Porras, president of ANACCIM, recalled that, since its founding in 1563, Durango has been a forger of history, culture, revolution, and resistance. “With that northern temperament that combines hospitality and character, art and words, history and action,” he thanked the Municipal Government and the people of Durango for facilitating the event.

For his part, Armando Fuentes Aguirre “Catón” said he was honored to be a chronicler, “guardians of history and of the love for the place where we were born and raised.” He noted that this Congress represents “the past, the present, and what lies ahead in the future to honor its people,” highlighting Durango’s beauty and hospitality.

More than 167 chroniclers from 23 states are participating in this Congress, which offers 119 presentations open to the public. The event is held within the framework of the 15th anniversary of the declaration of the “Camino Real de Tierra Adentro” as a World Heritage Site and reaffirms the Municipal Government’s commitment to culture, historical memory, and Durango pride.
