The president of the Senate’s Board of Directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, expressed his disagreement with the national leader of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, who reiterated the call for members to adhere to austerity.

During one of his video chats on social media broadcast from Tepoztlán, Morelos, Fernández Noroña rejected the request of Mayor Luján, who urged Morena leaders not to squander or display luxuries even if they have the resources to do so.

“Today I saw someone from the Morena leadership saying, I believe, that even if you have something to pay for yourself… No, no, no, no. Juárez was very clear. Mediocrity, decent mediocrity, as I was saying, is based on your income, just mediocrity. Whatever you can pay with your income is correct,” the senator stated.

The Morena member indicated that the issue of austerity is an open flank for the right to attack them, but they won’t be able to do so.

“All they bring is ‘Oh! Lovers of luxury, contradictions, they call themselves austere and they aren’t,'” Noroña mockingly stated.

He said the party must maintain unity heading into 2027, beyond “personal likes and dislikes.”

Recall that Fernández Noroña himself has been criticized for his various trips to Europe in business class and for purchasing a high-end SUV.

During her visit to the state of Morelos, Luisa María Alcalde reiterated that Morena leaders must “set an example” and adhere to austerity, following the scandals that have engulfed several members, including “Andy” López Beltrán and Sergio Gutiérrez Luna.

“Even if you have the resources to wear, for example, very expensive clothes, maybe I have the resources to buy a fur coat made of I don’t know what, maybe, but we shouldn’t do it because we are leaders of a movement that must set an example of just mediocrity,” stated the Morena leader.
