The incident occurred on Saturday, August 9, when a 10-year-old boy was caught in the rising waters of the Canalecón Creek in the Camino Real neighborhood, and was endangered by the speed and force of the water.
The incident occurred around 1:43 p.m., amid heavy rains affecting the area. The rainfall caused the water level in the Canalecón Creek to rise rapidly, generating dangerous currents.
A video captured the exact moment of the rescue, where state police entered the riverbed to save the child who was struggling against the current.
Members of the State Preventive Police, patrolling the Camino Real neighborhood, received a citizen’s alert about the dangerous situation.
Immediately, officers Jesús Antonio Castro Rico, Jorge Aarón, and Crisanta Guadalupe entered the creek to reach and rescue the child, who was being swept downstream.
Details of the rescue and police intervention
The rescue took place in difficult conditions due to rising water, which posed a risk to the officers. However, their quick reaction allowed them to rescue the child before the current swept him into a more dangerous area.
During the rescue, Forjadores de Sudcalifornia Boulevard and the Industrial Park were temporarily closed to facilitate the operation.
After being rescued, the child was handed over to his mother, Yaneth, a resident of the Agua Clara neighborhood. He had superficial bruises and abrasions and was in a state of shock. He received emotional support at the scene and did not require transfer to a hospital.
The strong current of the Canalecón Creek in La Paz, Baja California Sur, demonstrated the danger these waterways pose during the rainy season.
The sudden rise in water level and the speed of the flow create conditions that can endanger the lives of those near or attempting to cross these channels.
Baja California Sur authorities continue to recommend against approaching or crossing streams or canals during periods of heavy rain, due to the unpredictability and strength of the currents.
The child’s rescue demonstrates the seriousness of these situations and the need for a rapid and coordinated response by Baja California Sur’s security forces to prevent further tragedy.
