Mazatlán Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez said that of the 21 neighborhoods surveyed for damage from heavy rains, families in seven reported damage, requiring food supplies, cleaning supplies, stoves, refrigerators, and washing machines.
She noted that, in response to an offer from state Governor Rubén Rocha Moya to provide support to families whose homes suffered flooding caused by Tropical Storm Ivo, staff from the Department of Welfare and Social Development undertook a census of the damage.
In the neighborhoods of Adolfo López Mateos, Alarcón, El Barrón, Jicaradas, El Toreo, Rafael Buelna, and Urías, families in several homes visited reported losses of various household goods or requested assistance from food banks.
She announced that the state governor told her that once he has the official list of families affected by last Thursday’s heavy rains, he will proceed to order the delivery of checks and assistance to the affected families in the port. Therefore, the information and identities of the applicants are being verified.
Estrella Palacios stated that surveys continue to be conducted in other neighborhoods and subdivisions that suffered flooding problems, to understand and verify the damage to homes caused by the flooding.
The mayor stated that, as part of the city cleanup, during the fourth day, in which 500 people participated simultaneously in five sectors, 72 cubic meters of solid waste were removed, which threatened to reach the drainage system or storm drains.
He urged the public to keep their surroundings clean, not only to promote tourism, but also to prevent stormwater systems from collapsing during the rainy season due to the accumulation of trash and waste dumped on public roads.
