A 9-year-old boy, identified as Santiago, died after being attacked with a machete by his father, who was allegedly intoxicated, in Buenavista, a community in Tarandacuao, Guanajuato.
According to initial investigations, the incident occurred when the man arrived home intoxicated and carrying a machete. After starting an argument with his partner, identified as Betzy Mariza, he attacked them both.
Santiago suffered a deep wound to the abdomen, which proved fatal, while his mother received a severe blow to the head. She remains hospitalized at the Acámbaro General Hospital, where her condition is reported as serious.
Neighbors who heard the screams alerted authorities. The first to arrive were Tarandacuao Traffic Police officers, who attempted to transport the victims to a hospital. However, an ambulance arrived to provide medical attention; despite their efforts, the child did not survive. The Forensic Medical Service transported the body for an autopsy.
The attacker fled after the attack, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. The Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation to determine his whereabouts and clarify the events.
Another case of violence in Mexico
On the night of August 10, 2025, a dispute over the use of a shared patio in an apartment building in the Morelos neighborhood, in the Venustiano Carranza municipality (popularly known as Tepito), in Mexico City, led to a tragedy. According to police reports, at least three neighbors had been arguing for days over the space where they would hang their clothes. The argument escalated to the point that one of the neighbors, Indira López Muñoz, 44, returned armed and shot her rivals.
The victims were identified as Monika Picón, 35, and her mother, Yolanda Vieyra, 64. Both were found lying lifeless in the communal courtyard. A 37-year-old man—identified by some media outlets as Joel Castillo—was injured by gunshot wounds to the chest. Paramedics from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) confirmed the women’s deaths at the scene and transported the man to Balbuena Hospital.
Neighbors alerted officers to the presence of the perpetrator near the property. Based on the information provided, the police launched a chase that culminated in the arrest of Indira López Muñoz a few meters from the scene. During the search, they seized a 9mm pistol and magazine. According to a report by journalist Carlos Jiménez, the woman was accompanied by two men who managed to flee; at the time of writing, they had not been identified.
