In recent years, sports tourism in Mexico has established itself as one of the key drivers of the national economy. Aware of the high demand and profits generated by this sector, Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora announced the estimated figures for the end of the year thanks to foreigners visiting the country for sports-related activities.

Thanks to high-demand events such as Formula 1, the NBA, and MLB, among others, in addition to the diverse natural attractions offered by the Mexican Republic, the country has become a benchmark in the sports world.

Based on this premise, during the “Mañanera” (Morning Show) this Friday, August 22, according to Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, throughout 2025, sporting events have been synonymous with an enormous economic impact for Mexico, generating revenue exceeding 64 billion pesos, a figure that represents 10% of total tourism GDP expenditure.

According to the secretary, one in 10 international tourists who visit Mexico does so for sports purposes, whether to participate in competitions, attend large-scale events, or engage in recreational activities.

“It is important to mention that sports tourism in Mexico today reaches the Magical Towns, the communities, and allows us not only to foster social cohesion but also to showcase the beauty of our country. One in 10 international tourists who visit our country come to participate in sports activities; this represents approximately 64 billion in economic revenue, representing 10% of total tourism GDP globally,” the tourism secretary stated.

She also emphasized the premise that, by the end of the year, Mexico will have hosted more than 100 sporting events, ranging from high-performance competitions to recreational activities in key tourist destinations. She noted that this strategy has the support of the president and the collaboration of former Olympic diver Rommel Pacheco, current director of CONADE.

“In this strategy, the president, along with my colleague Rommel Pacheco, will host more than 100 events by 2025 […] Mexico is the world’s leading country in terms of natural resources and the fifth in terms of cultural resources; this allows racers to experience and feel the grandeur and essence of Mexico,” Josefina stated during the morning press conference.

And speaking of the Mexico City Grand Prix (Formula 1) alone, the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico City (Canaco CDMX) indicated that the average spending by fans attending the AHR over the weekend is 6.795 billion pesos.

While not all sporting events held in Mexico are of the same nature as the F1 GP, the 60 billion pesos is a logical figure considering everything that happens in the country (sport-wise) throughout the year.
