With the goal of strengthening investment in air connectivity, Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado and Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of the OMA Airport Group, signed a collaboration agreement to boost and promote connectivity between the Acapulco and Zihuatanejo airports, develop new routes, and modernize facilities. This represents an investment of more than one billion pesos (approximately US$50 million) over the next five years.
At this meeting in Acapulco, which was also attended by OMA Director of Aviation Development Abelardo Muñoz and the state Secretary of Tourism Simón Quiñones, it was announced that development is expected to be decisively promoted, with a view to expanding operations at both airports, reaching 2.3 million passengers annually.
This is a comprehensive strategy that seeks to strengthen and restore connectivity and address various areas. These actions are aimed at leveraging local and international flight segments, increasing flight frequencies, and collaborating on events such as the 2026 Tourist Market, all with the goal of promoting Guerrero as a global tourist destination.
Major rehabilitation of runways and runway strips, rehabilitation of apron slabs, integration of technological equipment for passenger flows, acquisition of fire-fighting units, implementation of technology for the responsible consumption of renewable natural resources, road rehabilitation, construction of a wastewater treatment plant, acquisition of a check-in and boarding system, acquisition of 400 Hz Ground Power Units (GPUs), and replacement of air conditioners, among others, are planned.
The National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) recently presented the progress made to date on the rehabilitation of the Costera Miguel Alemán in Acapulco. These projects are part of the “Acapulco Transforms With You” program, which aims to rebuild the destination after Hurricanes Otis and John.
