Durango’s roads are showing varying levels of damage following the rainy season. According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), 15 percent of federal highway sections have severe damage, while 40 percent of the state network has been reported to be in disrepair.

Ángel Sergio Devora, director of the SICT Center in Durango, reported that maintenance work is being carried out preventively to ensure traffic flow throughout the territory. In the case of the municipality of Mezquital, he explained that the first 80 kilometers from the capital are federal highways.

“From Durango to Mezquital, the 80 kilometers are federal highways; the agency is responsible for them. Currently, at kilometer 25, at the Valle Florido junction, we are carrying out lane widening work to address a problem area where accidents occurred,” he noted.

State Network Shows 800 Kilometers of Damage

For her part, Ana Rosa Hernández Rentería, the state’s Secretary of Communications and Transportation, detailed that nearly 800 kilometers of the state network are damaged, representing approximately 40 percent of the total.

“We have 60 percent in good condition. Obviously, we need to address the remaining 40 percent, which requires surface and deep patching, and in some areas, more timely interventions,” she stated.

The official explained that materials such as asphalt have been arranged to be allocated to the areas with the greatest need, with the intention of maximizing available resources.

Without Sufficient Support from the Federation

In contrast, Francisco Salazar Mendía, president of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) in Durango, warned that despite the level of deterioration of the road network, there is insufficient support from the federation, as budgets have been considerably reduced.

“By 2025, only 180 million pesos are planned. This will only allow for the implementation of patching plans, not the comprehensive restoration of the pavement infrastructure,” he said.

Martha Olivia García Vidaña, federal representative for District 1, stated that since the beginning of the current term, she has sought resources to improve the highway that connects the capital with the municipality of Tepehuanes. She emphasized that the road requires rehabilitation work due to the damage accumulated over several years.

Given this situation, state authorities and representatives of the construction sector insisted on the need to increase investment to guarantee user safety and connectivity in Durango.
