The Colima State Health Secretariat confirmed the death of a patient from Tonila, Jalisco, due to human rabies. The man died in a Colima hospital after being attacked by an animal in his home state, marking another rabies case in Mexico on the list.

According to official information, the attack occurred in mid-May in Jalisco. Days later, the victim presented symptoms such as fatigue and numbness in the bite area, prompting him to seek medical attention at a local health center.

With his neurological symptoms worsening, on August 7, he was admitted to a private hospital in Colima, where the protocol for suspected rabies was activated. On August 17, he was transferred in critical condition to the IMSS General Hospital Zone 1 in Colima, where he died a few days later.

The Colima Health Secretariat clarified that this case is attributed to Jalisco, as the attack that led to the infection occurred there. The agency emphasized that the state has not recorded any confirmed cases of rabies in residents since 1987, although it acknowledged that the virus is still present in the country.

Second rabies case in Mexico in 2025

Mexico recently added another case in Zacatecas. In June 2025, a 17-year-old girl was attacked by a skunk in the municipality of Mezquital del Oro. After several days of hospitalization, the minor died on August 24.

Health authorities emphasized that rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and other species is the main preventive measure to avoid human transmission. They also emphasized that epidemiological surveillance remains active throughout Mexico, where the virus remains on alert.

With these two confirmed cases in 2025, authorities reiterated the importance of immediate medical attention for any attack by an animal suspected of carrying rabies. Prevention, they indicated, is the most effective tool to reduce the risk of transmission.
