With an investment of 1.309 billion pesos, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) will complete the modernization and expansion of the Pochutla-Huatulco section of the highway next December, as part of the Salina Cruz-Zihuatanejo highway axis, according to a statement.
The works will benefit 950,000 residents of the region, the agency reported.
The work consists of widening the crown width by 25.6 kilometers (km) from seven to 12 meters, with two lanes of traffic and shoulders on each side.
This will improve curves for greater speed and allow users to reach their destinations safely and quickly, saving 20 minutes on their travel time.
“With an investment of 1.309 billion pesos, work began on May 16 of this year. The resources include construction, construction supervision, and payments for the release of the right-of-way,” the SICT stated in its statement.
The work on this highway generates 1,800 direct jobs and 3,600 indirect jobs, in addition to the 300-person workforce employed with nearly 100 machines.
The SICT detailed that the work will smooth out curves and the shoulders will allow for passing maneuvers, which will speed up traffic for light vehicles and allow for speed increases from 40 km/h to 90 km/h.
“Additionally, motorists will find greater safety with two lanes, which will allow them to travel faster, with everything properly marked and with improvements on the curves,” the Secretariat emphasized.
