Women deprived of their liberty and held at the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) No. 1 in Durango and originally from the Comarca Lagunera region, are doubly abandoned by their families, according to data from the Durango Association of United Women Lawyers (CAUDAC), which is conducting a fundraising campaign for them.
Alfa Ávila, president of the Association based in Durango, explained that unlike men, a large number of women, especially those from La Laguna, are forgotten by their families. Distance and lack of resources could be factors.
However, the situation is different for men. According to the lawyer, there is always a visit, whether from a mother, sister, or partner, who is attentive to their needs.
“Unfortunately, naturally, when people are incarcerated, there are people who suffer abandonment, both men and women. However, unfortunately, it occurs more among women. It’s incredible, but men are constantly visited by their mothers, sisters, and partners; there is someone who always looks out for them.
But in the case of women, it’s not; we have discrimination to that extent, and in the case of La Laguna, they are doubly abandoned, because visiting them requires time, transportation, and meals for the people who come. If they are going to stay there, they also have to consider the issue of lodging. These are people who lack liquid resources, so many of them have families, children, and who cares for them. So, well, they justify it like this: ‘They don’t come to see me because my mother and sister are taking care of my children,’” shared the president of the civil society organization.
According to Ávila, of the total female population in the Durango Cereso, 45 percent are originally from the Laguna region.
For this reason, in addition to inviting the public to collaborate with the personal hygiene item collection campaign, the organization is urging families with a relative in the prison who would like to send something to visit the Second Office of the State Human Rights Commission located in Gómez Palacio, as this is the only location for receiving this type of support.
According to Alfa Ávila, the collection campaign will end on September 19th, with delivery beginning on the 20th.
