Cancún International Airport handled 20.4 million passengers between January and August 2025, representing a 3.7% decrease compared to the same period last year, according to the monthly report prepared by Aeropuertos del Sureste (Asur).
If this pace continues, the Cancún airport could approach closing the year with 30 million passengers, a figure reached for the first time in 2022 and repeated in 2024.
International passenger traffic remains the main driver of air traffic in the Mexican Caribbean, with 13.7 million passengers in the first eight months of the year, while domestic passenger traffic stands at 6.6 million.
In other words, international passenger traffic doubles the domestic passenger traffic.
International routes are expected to continue increasing following the confirmation of visas for the Brazilian market starting in February 2026. As a result, the state Tourism Secretariat has announced the initiation of efforts to recover flights from the South American country that were lost between 2023 and 2024.
Andrés Martínez Reynoso, head of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, announced that efforts have begun to meet with the main South American tour operators at the Latin American International Tourism Fair, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from September 27 to 30. This fair will bring together more than 31,000 tourism professionals in a 34,625 square meter exhibition space.
He announced that, following instructions from Governor Mara Lezama, these meetings will be attended with the goal of recovering lost air connectivity with South America. This will eventually be reflected in international air traffic levels not only for Cancún but also for Tulum.
