Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration is promoting a special tax on violent video games to address security and increase tax revenue in the country.
The Mexican government is proposing an 8% special tax on video games considered violent. The measure seeks to curb their consumption while simultaneously increasing tax revenue.
This tax will be applied to extremely violent or adult video games, distributed both physically and digitally in the country.
The proposal is related to security issues and the impact that certain violent games can have on children and adolescents.
Members of the Ministry of Economy noted that Mexico is one of the world’s largest consumers of online games, especially on consoles such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
In that sense, this initiative seeks not only to address social concerns but also to contribute to increasing the country’s tax revenue.
