Aeroméxico-Delta split: How the US decision will affect flights and passengers

In an interview with Ana Francisca Vega for MVS Noticias, Luis Miguel González, editorial director of El Economista, shared his analysis of the US government’s decision to order Aeroméxico and Delta to terminate their collaboration agreement.

According to the analyst, this change not only affects the airlines, but also has repercussions for air transport operations, which connect the two countries with approximately 900 flights daily.

“What the US Department of Transportation is saying is that they no longer want the alliance to continue operating under the terms it has been operating until now.”

This suggests greater concerns about competition and control of the airline market.

Despite the order, Aeroméxico has attempted to minimize the impact on its relationship with Delta, stating that its operations will continue. “Delta owns 20% of Aeroméxico, so the frequent flyer programs and some routes will continue.” However, the situation could change as the rules of the game are redefined.

Additional Challenges of the Separation of Aeroméxico and Delta
In addition to the interruption of the agreement, Luis Miguel emphasized that “this context is relevant, considering that the 90-day period for Mexico to resolve non-tariff barriers is running out.”

The analyst warns that this could be the first step by the United States to also intervene in broader regulatory issues, including security and competition in other sectors.

Luis Miguel concludes: “Today we are talking about transportation, but at any moment they will issue a warning about piracy and health regulations.”

This suggests that US pressure could extend beyond aviation. The changes in air transport regulations are a wake-up call for Aeroméxico and Delta. With 900 daily flights between Mexico and the United States, the future of this alliance is uncertain.

Los cambios en la regulación del transporte aéreo son una llamada de atención para Aeroméxico y Delta. Con 900 vuelos diarios entre México y Estados Unidos.
