Puerto Vallarta International Airport is experiencing a period of expansion, positioning it as one of the main links between Mexico and North America. With new routes to the United States and Canada, the terminal, operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), seeks to respond to the growth of tourism in the region and strengthen its role as a gateway to the Mexican Pacific.
Meanwhile, in the case of the United States, Southwest Airlines will open new routes from San Diego and St. Louis beginning in March 2026. These flights aim to capture some of the 14.1 million American visitors who arrived in Mexico in 2024, representing a 4.6% increase compared to 2023.
Decline in international tourism affects airport traffic in May
With these additions, the airport will serve a total of 54 domestic and international destinations during the peak season, consolidating its position as the second-largest destination for Canadian passengers and one of the most important for American tourism. In 2024 alone, it handled 6.8 million travelers, both domestic and international.
Finally, with this expansion, Puerto Vallarta International Airport not only increases its connectivity but also strengthens its position as a key tourist hub in the Mexican Pacific, supported by sustained growth in the Canadian and United States air travel markets.
