Television anchor Débora Estrella, of the Telediario de Monterrey news program, died Saturday afternoon in a plane crash in the municipality of García, Nuevo León. The pilot of the aircraft, identified as Brayan Maldonado Ballesteros Argueta, died in the same accident, according to state authorities.
According to the report issued by the State Investigation Agency, the incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Cobre and Sigma streets, in the Parque Industrial Mitras neighborhood. The aircraft crashed into the river, prompting immediate mobilization of Municipal Police, Civil Protection, and forensic experts from the Attorney General’s Office.
The official report states that the bodies of the anchor and the pilot were found dead upon arrival of rescuers, who descended to the crash site after confirming the crash. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, while autopsy results are pending to determine the cause of death for both victims.
Detectives from the State Investigation Agency conducted the initial inquiries at the scene, interviewing the first responders, the police officers who arrived first on the scene. The destroyed aircraft was placed under the custody of the authorities, while personnel from the Prosecutor’s Office ordered the removal of the bodies for transfer to the Forensic Medical Service.
The death of Débora Estrella caused shock in the journalism and television community of Monterrey, where the anchor had established herself as a featured personality on Telediario, a news program owned by Grupo Multimedios. Several colleagues expressed their solidarity with the family and mourned the loss of the journalist.
