The opening ceremony of the 32nd Zacatecas National Charro Senior Championship 2025 “Don Álvaro Perales Luna” was held this Sunday afternoon at the Monumental Lienzo Charro “Antonio Aguilar Barraza” in Zacatecas, the capital city. Government officials, directors of the Mexican Charrería Federation, and representatives from various state unions gathered.
The ceremony was led by Le Roy Barragán Ocampo, Secretary of Tourism for the Zacatecas State Government, accompanied by Rafael Mansur Oviedo, Secretary General of the Mexican Charrería Federation. They highlighted the importance of this national competition being held in Zacatecas, a land of deep charro tradition, which will also host the 2026 National Charro Congress and Championship next year.
The ceremony was also attended by Her Majesty Natalia I, national sovereign of the Federation, and Her Majesty Ana María I, national queen of the Charro Seniors category, who graced the event with their representation.
Specially attended by the honoree himself, Don Álvaro Perales Luna, a leading figure in national charrería, whose name distinguishes this edition of the championship in recognition of his career and contribution to the quintessential Mexican sport.
Numerous charrería figures attended the ceremony, including the National Coordinator of Older Charros, Gerardo Rico Cázares; the National Coordinator of Judges, José de Jesús Fermín Torres; and the National Coordinator of Announcers, Antonio Robles, as well as presidents of charro associations from various states across the country, who highlighted the start of the activities.
With this formal ceremony, the 2025 National Charro Older Championship was officially inaugurated. This competition will bring together the category’s greatest exponents in the arena over the next few days, reaffirming Zacatecas as a place of great tradition and history for Mexican charrería.
Opening Charreada
The 2025 National Senior Charro Championship kicked off at noon this Sunday with a charreada in which the Guanajuato team of San José Iturbide won the duel with 226 points, against 155 points from Hacienda El Relicario “Mobil” of San Luis Potosí, and 151 points for the Charros del Pacífico.
This is the first of 17 duels scheduled to take place this week at the Monumental de Zacatecas, including both teams and escaramuzas for senior charros, not to mention the two full charro duels (in five faenas).
In addition to these charreadas, a National Caladero, Pialadero, and Coleadero are planned, as well as Assemblies and the renowned 5th National Salon Floreo Championship.
San José Iturbide de Guanajuato won the first duel with 226 points, including 34 from José Luis Álvarez Montes’s horse cala, without piales. In the coleo, they accumulated 65 points, with 25 from José Francisco Muñoz Guerrero, 22 from José Germán Álvarez Montes, and 18 from Juan Jaime Muñoz Ledo Oliveros.
Emilio Caballero Márquez earned nine points in his bull riding, a 29-point head rope from Noé Alcaraz Vidal, and the three-man team was completed by Rodolfo Moncada Jiménez with his pial, which earned 23 points.
Emilio Caballero’s mare riding also saw the mare ride, totaling 17 points. There was no luck in the manganas on foot, with one on horseback earning 25 points from Juan Jaime Muñoz Ledo, and another 24 from Emilio Caballero’s paso de la muerte.
Of the 155 points scored by Hacienda El Relicario “Mobil” of San Luis Potosí, Roberto Díaz de León Martinez contributed 23 good points in the horse cala, two pialazos in the arena that Edgar Alfredo Baca Villado scored, earning 42, although in the tails, 17 points were scored, of which 14 went to José Creso Medina.
Jesús Narcisco Mendoza Guerrero’s bull riding contributed 16 points, although in the trio, only the 27-point head rope from Rafael Concepción Aguilar Segovia was achieved, leaving the trio incomplete.
Narciso Mendoza also earned 11 good points in the mare riding, five negative points in the manganas on foot, and one 24-point horse riding from Rafael Aguilar, finishing without a paso de la muerte.
The Charros del Pacífico, from Sinaloa, closed their presentation in this National Charro Mayor with 151 points, of which 25 were the work of Jesús Quinto Jayme Esquerra Hernández, a pial of 16 by Luis Bernardo Osuna Arámburo, as well as 58 of tails, tied Manuel Gaspar Rivera Valenzuela and Luis Bernardo Osuna with 21 each, as well as 16 of Fernando Ortega Dávila.
They were unsuccessful in the bull riding, but the team did complete with lassoes from Sebastián Muñoz Venegas and Fernando Ortega Dávila, scoring 26 and 18 points, respectively, with three minutes of time saved.
The young Jesús Toloza Garate also rode the mare for six good points. They were unsuccessful in the manganas, as they lost 14 points in the horse riding. Luis Bernardo Osuna executed the paso de la muerte (pass of death) to salvage his final 16 points.
