Last week, the Mazatlán Aquatic Rescue Squadron (Santiago de Mazatlán, Sinaloa), rescued three swimmers, including two minors from Chihuahua, who were swept away by the current in the area of Playas Gaviotas 1.
The young people were taken to the breakwaters, where the waves increased in strength, putting their safety at risk.
The lifeguards managed to keep the children afloat and brought them to shore, where they underwent a medical evaluation. Fortunately, they only suffered fatigue, with no serious injuries. In another intervention during the same day, they also assisted a swimmer from Mexico City who was pulled by the current at Playa Norte 4.
Local authorities and rescue personnel reminded everyone of the importance of following lifeguard instructions, avoiding entering the water where red flags are posted, and staying away from areas with rough tides. Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of sweeping swimmers several meters out to sea in a matter of seconds.
