Civil Guard officers conducting operational duties in the Zirahuén area were attacked by a criminal group who fired shots at the officers from a nearby hill, sparking a confrontation that lasted several minutes. In response, apparent accomplices of the criminals blocked several roads and, in Capula, a municipality in Morelia, tried to set fire to a water tanker.
It was Monday afternoon when state patrol officers began requesting support via radio, indicating that they were being attacked by a criminal cell near the town of Los Cerritos.
An air and ground deployment was immediately activated, with members of the Civil Guard, police from neighboring municipalities, the National Guard, and the Mexican Army in support of the attacked officers.
Minutes later, armed individuals robbed the driver of a water truck on the Morelia-Quiroga Highway near Capula and tried to set it on fire, but someone quickly extinguished the blaze.
Simultaneously, other criminals seized trucks, buses, and pickup trucks, blocking the Pátzcuaro-Uruapan, Pátzcuaro-Erongarícuaro, and Quiroga-Zacapu highways, in an apparent reaction to the events in Zirahuén.
In response to the massive inter-agency operation implemented in the area of the conflict, the gunmen fled and entered a mountainous area, where they remain sought by authorities. No casualties or injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.
While patrol cars arrived at the blocked roads, tow trucks assisted them and removed the vehicles to restore traffic.
