Having a dog as a pet is one of the most beautiful experiences we can have, because we can learn from them the unconditional, loyal, and faithful love they offer without asking for anything in return. Currently, companion animals have been given greater attention, creating days to commemorate and honor them.
Did you know that September 23rd is World Adopted Dog Day? This date seeks to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and providing a loving and caring home for abandoned dogs.
According to information from INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), the Mexican Association of Veterinarians Specializing in Small Animals (AMMVEPE), and UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), there are more than 20 million homeless dogs in Mexico, of which nearly 70% were abandoned. Each year, it is estimated that more than 500,000 dogs and cats are abandoned in the country.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), animal abandonment creates public health and environmental problems and affects biodiversity.
Main causes of pet abandonment
Lack of financial resources for their upkeep
Behavioral problems due to lack of training
Unplanned litters
Misinformation about responsible pet ownership
On the other hand, the abandonment of older dogs has become an increasingly visible and worrying situation in Mexico.
That’s why we must raise awareness about the importance of adopting dogs and giving them a second life where they feel loved and cared for. One of the best options is to adopt a dog, because when someone adopts a pet, space is created for another dog to be rescued and taken to a shelter, preventing them from continuing to live on the streets and suffering from hunger and cold.
Finally, it’s also important to remember that when adopting a pet, it requires attention and care for its well-being. So, if you want to give a dog love and a home, go to shelters or rescue a homeless one and provide it with everything it needs.
