The heavy rains recorded since midday affected Culiacán and other municipalities in the state, with precipitation accompanied by electrical activity and gusty winds. The weather radar reported very heavy rains in Guasave, Badiraguato, and the municipality of Sinaloa; heavy rains in Angostura, Salvador Alvarado, Mocorito, Culiacán, Eldorado, and Cosalá; and moderate rains in Los Mochis, El Fuerte, Choix, and Navolato.
In the capital of Sinaloa, the rains caused flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and traffic disruptions. Therefore, Civil Protection and Public Safety authorities are warning about the risks of crossing bodies of water and flooded areas.
Road Closures and Citizen Support
The Municipal Public Safety and Transit Secretariat reported preventive closures at several strategic points in Culiacán, such as Zapata and Independencia streets, Fray Marco de Niza and Zapata streets, Xicoténcatl Boulevard and Doctor Mora streets, and Independencia Avenue to the south. The underpasses of Pedro Infante, Federalismo, Ley Valle, José Limón, Lola Beltrán, and Arjona remain open.
Traffic police are conducting patrols and monitoring the affected areas to guide drivers and ensure mobility. They also assisted a driver who was stranded due to a mechanical failure, pushing his vehicle to a safe place.
Child dies after being swept away by the current
A 9-year-old boy, identified as Matías, died in the Cañadas area of Culiacán after being swept away by the current generated by the rains around 1:30 p.m. while playing near a home on Sierra Madre Occidental and Cerro de la Memoria streets. The current dragged him several meters and he was trapped under a vehicle.
Family members were able to rescue him and take him to the IMSS clinic in Cañadas, where he sadly died.
Civil Protection Recommendations
Civil Protection urges citizens not to cross flooded streets or streams, avoid recreational activities during heavy rains, and exercise extreme caution when driving due to flooding and low visibility. It is recommended that residents stay in safe places, report emergencies to 911, and remain alert to official weather reports.
