In recent weeks, at least 30 stray dogs have died from poisoning in San Pablo Villa de Mitla, classified as a Magical Town in Oaxaca, according to reports from residents on social media.
According to residents, unknown individuals have been dumping dog food such as kibble and poisoned meat. This has been occurring for approximately a week, affecting not only stray animals but also dogs with homes.
Yesterday, another case occurred in which three dogs were found dead on different streets in this Oaxaca municipality, allegedly due to having consumed some type of poison.

In some publications, the municipal authorities of Mitla have been blamed for these deaths.
The San Pablo Villa de Mitla city council, however, in a statement distanced itself from these poisonings and noted that there is an overpopulation of dogs on the streets of the municipality and that there have been reports of attacks on children in the community.
“We know there is a problem with the overpopulation of stray dogs and that we have received reports of attacks on children, the elderly, and other animals. In response, our commitment has always been to seek responsible and humane solutions,” the municipal official stated.
She added that, with its own resources, a shelter was built to address this problem, but that the space was destroyed “by some irresponsible citizens,” which limits their ability to adequately address “the situation according to our plan.”
The municipality also rejected the idea that this issue is being used for political purposes or to damage Mitla’s image.
