Flooding in recent weeks in the municipality of Mulegé caused partial and total damage to more than 90 homes in the community of San Ignacio and 27 in Vizcaíno.
The director of the Housing Institute (INVI), Benjamín García Meza, stated that the rainfall generated by Hurricane Lorena and the flooding of the San Pablo Creek flooded three neighborhoods in the town of Vizcaíno, where the families affected by the flooding received relief packages.
He mentioned that later in San Ignacio, on September 15, a flooding creek cut off the Transpeninsular Highway, causing flooding in the Paredones neighborhood, where several homes suffered structural damage and families lost all their household belongings.
He explained that the following day, the 16th, another torrential downpour affected the downtown area and other neighborhoods that had not been damaged by the previous day’s rains.
He pointed out that the damage assessment revealed 42 homes with minor damage, as well as 15 with major damage, some of which require relocation and others reconstruction on the same site.
He explained that when the aid was delivered to the affected families, others were found to have not reported their situation, so the corresponding verification was conducted, adding 37 more homes with damage.
He mentioned that the aid, both in the form of material packages and complete homes, is covered by the disaster relief trust, which is funded by a percentage of the lodging tax.
