A 30-meter-long section of Federal Highway 105 Mexico–Tampico collapsed and collapsed on the side that runs alongside a cliff, at kilometer 140,000 of the highway, between the towns of Tlaxcango and Tenango, in the municipality of Lolotla, located in the heart of the Sierra Alta of Hidalgo.
In what has become a dangerous trap for motorists, the collapse could extend another 30 meters, according to a report by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Development (SIPDUS).
The agency detailed that the collapse that caused the landslide wiped out three-quarters of the width of the highway, or approximately seven meters.
As of Saturday, the cause of the landslide was unknown, but it is suspected that it could be due to a possible geological fault. However, geologists will determine this in the coming days.
For now, that section is closed to traffic, reported the Hidalgo Delegation of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).
“In coordination with local authorities, we have marked and sealed off the area, so there is no through traffic,” SICT stated.
The agency asked drivers to seek alternative routes.
Work has also begun to open a lane and evaluate controlled vehicle traffic.
State police and Lolotla Civil Protection cordoned off the area as soon as the alarm was raised, while members of the National Guard and state Civil Protection are securing the area to prevent a further tragedy.
