In a high-impact binational operation, Guatemalan military forces captured Roger Irabier Roblero López, alias “El Peque,” identified as one of the main operators of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in the border region between Mexico and Guatemala.

Mexican authorities also accuse him of being the leader of the so-called Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel.

The arrest, according to the Guatemalan government, took place during a tactical operation by the 5th Infantry Brigade, deployed in the La Mesilla sector of Huehuetenango, a strategic area for the illicit trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people.

After his arrest, “El Peque” was handed over to the National Civil Police (PNC), who transported him to the Mexican border, where he was received by members of the Police Reaction and Intervention Force (FRIP) and personnel from the Chiapas State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

The Attorney General of the State of Chiapas, Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, confirmed that “El Peque” was a priority target for Mexican authorities. He explained that his capture was possible thanks to joint intelligence work between Mexican and Guatemalan security forces, in coordination with the FGE (Federal Executive Branch) and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSP).

“Roger ‘N’ is the alleged leader of a criminal cell of the CJNG (CJNG) and the Chiapas-Guatemala cartel, a generator of violence in the Sierra region. He faces an arrest warrant for aggravated homicide committed in December 2020, when he participated in the murder of four people in the municipality of Frontera Comalapa. He also has an Interpol red card,” stated the Prosecutor.

The detainee was transferred to the “El Amate” state prison, where he will be brought before a judge. The Prosecutor’s Office announced that it will request a sentence of up to 50 years in prison, while the investigation into other crimes against him continues. “He is linked to multiple criminal acts in the region,” Llaven Abarca added.

According to security sources, “El Peque” is the nephew of Bladimir Orantes, alias “El Ruso,” co-founder of the criminal group “El MAÍZ” (Movement for Authentic Zapatista Independence), which operates in the Sierra and border regions of Chiapas and has been directly linked to the CJNG (CJNG).

Despite its name with an apparent social background, El MAÍZ has been identified by authorities as an active part of organized crime, involved in activities such as extortion, human trafficking, and armed territorial control.

Reports indicate that the cell led by “El Peque” maintained influence in several strategic municipalities in Chiapas, including Amatenango de la Frontera, Chicomuselo, Bella Vista, and Frontera Comalapa. These points have been used as trafficking routes for drugs, weapons, and migrants into Mexican territory. Binational Coordination Against Organized Crime

Authorities emphasized that this operation represents a severe blow to the criminal structures operating in the border region and is an example of the strengthening of cooperation between Mexico and Guatemala to combat transnational organized crime.

“It is a severe blow to the criminal structures that use the border as a strategic corridor,” stated spokespersons for both governments.

The capture of “El Peque” not only weakens the operational capacity of the CJNG and the Chiapas-Guatemala cartel in the area, but also sets a precedent for the effectiveness of joint action to regain control in vulnerable territories.

Investigations continue with the goal of completely dismantling the support and operational network of this criminal cell, as well as its possible links to other cartels and local groups, concluded Prosecutor Llaven Abarca.
