Mayor Mauricio Trejo stated that San Miguel de Allende will maintain healthy finances and will not resort to borrowing, despite the fact that the state government has raised the need to acquire debt to promote strategic projects. He does, however, expect two projects to be included in the state government’s debt package.
“We have already delivered the package of works that we hope will be included in the debt requested by the governor. However, San Miguel will not request debt, either this year or in the following years,” stated the mayor, who also emphasized that his administration has worked to reduce the debt inherited from Luis Alberto Villarreal’s administration.
Trejo recalled that, at the beginning of his term, the municipality faced a debt of more than 130 million pesos.
Today, he said, only about 15 million pesos remain to be covered. “Governing through debt is very easy; the problem is that subsequent administrations carry the burden. I prefer to work with sound finances and leave San Miguel in a better economic situation,” he noted.
The mayor acknowledged that he personally disagrees with the debt, although he respects the governor’s decision and will support her financial strategy.
“She won and has a government plan that must be implemented; I support approving the debt. But personally and at the municipal level, we have a different view,” he added.
Regarding the projects that San Miguel de Allende has proposed to the state government, Trejo highlighted two main projects:
Comprehensive Linear Park. With an estimated investment of 120 million pesos, the project seeks to address the needs of security, social development, and recreation for children, youth, and senior citizens. “It’s a project that falls under four strategic axes; we’re not asking for anything out of order,” the mayor explained.
Beautification of the exit to Celaya. This area has established itself as an economic hub and a hub for tourism decentralization, so the administration plans to invest municipal resources if the government’s debt package fails to approve it.
We haven’t borrowed in three years, and we won’t for the remainder of this administration. San Miguel will continue moving forward with healthy finances and projects that truly impact people’s lives. Mauricio Trejo, Mayor of San Miguel de Allende
Finally, the mayor stated, “If the government doesn’t take on the debt, we will start next year with our own resources,” and reaffirmed his commitment to responsible and transparent management.
