More than 20 billboards that posed a risk to the population were removed in the municipality during this rainy season.

The director of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Zihuatanejo, Jorge Cervantes Álvarez, reported that the removed structures were not only identified after technical reports, but that many lacked permits or did not meet minimum legal requirements.

He added that there are still irregular billboards pending review and removal.

Following Hurricane Otis, which hit Acapulco, the state government promoted the removal of affected billboards and planned reforms to prohibit their installation in areas vulnerable to hurricanes or earthquakes, so that they do not become a risk.

The new measures seek to prevent advertising from being installed in areas where they could collapse in strong winds and cause damage to homes, pedestrians, or cars.

This reform is expected to give municipal authorities greater authority to order demolitions or sanction advertisers.
