Two irregular neighborhoods in this municipal seat marked their ninth anniversary with massive celebrations, including cake, speeches, dancing, and even musical groups on a stage with lights.

While many squatter settlements erupted simultaneously on October 2, 2016, right around the time of the change of government between the outgoing administration of Roberto Borge and the incoming administration of Carlos Joaquín, only two held celebrations to mark the occasion.

Perhaps the largest and most well-known squatter settlement in the city, Colonia 2 de Octubre, held a daytime celebration, with cake and speeches by so-called “leaders.”

Former councilman Carlos Coral Basurto was present, representing current councilman Jorge Portilla Mánica, who was hailed as a “friend” of this squatter settlement by those present.

Afterward, another celebration began in the Tumben Ki neighborhood, where a stage was set up for live bands.

Atilano Arana Obregón, president of the “Pluricultural Ethnic Committee” representing this and two other irregular areas, announced to those present that the Tulum City Council is already showing interest in achieving municipalization of its main avenues: Satélite, Géminis Orión, and Centauro, which are on state government land.

If this is achieved, he added, the installation of public lighting will continue, in parallel with the pilot electrification program that is about to begin.
