The Sonora government reported that cloud formations from Tropical Cyclone Priscilla will cause rainfall of up to 150 millimeters (6 inches) and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h (56 mph) in coastal and southern municipalities of the state.

The Sonora government, through the State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC), reported that the heaviest rainfall of the month will be recorded this coming weekend, resulting from cloud formations from Tropical Cyclone Priscilla.

According to the forecast issued by the Technical Directorate of Emergencies and Disasters, the rainfall will begin this Friday, October 10, and could continue until Tuesday, October 14, with varying intensity across much of Sonora.

The northwest, north, central, eastern, and southern regions of the state will receive the most significant rainfall, with accumulated amounts that could vary between 75 and 150 millimeters (3 to 6 inches), although storms are also expected in other municipalities.

According to Civil Protection estimates, the heaviest or torrential rains, exceeding 150 millimeters (6 inches), could occur in areas of Hermosillo (coast), Guaymas, Empalme, and Huatabampo, while the municipalities of Álamos, Cajeme, Navojoa, Etchojoa, and Bácum are expected to see very heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, towns such as Cananea, Nogales, Magdalena, Ures, and Yécora are expected to see rainfall between 50 and 75 millimeters (2 to 3 inches), and light to moderate rain is expected in northwestern municipalities such as Caborca, Sonoyta, and Puerto Peñasco.

Priscilla will bring torrential rains to Sonora starting Friday.

Civil Protection stated that a direct impact from the cyclone is not expected in Sonora, although cloud bands associated with the tropical system will keep the sky partly cloudy starting Wednesday and will increase the chances of rain as the weekend approaches.

Additionally, winds with gusts of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour are forecast along the coastline and waves of three to five meters in coastal municipalities and fishing communities.

The state agency also warned that a new cyclone with a 70 percent probability of development could approach the northwest region of the country in the coming days, increasing the possibility of more rain after the passage of Priscilla.

Sonora Civil Protection reiterated its call to the population to stay informed and follow preventive recommendations, such as avoiding crossing rivers or streams, not littering the streets, checking household drains, and taking shelter in safe places during storms.

In case of emergency, they asked people to call 911 or follow official advisories from the CEPC and municipal authorities.
