A reward of 1 million pesos is being offered by the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office for information leading to the location and capture of former agents of the Ministerial Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC), Argel Azael Luna Delgado and Miguel Ángel Palafox López.
Both are wanted by authorities after being identified as allegedly responsible for shooting attorney Carlos Arturo Bustamante Bracamontes more than 70 times in a case that has the litigant in critical condition.
On Monday, October 6, the Sonora Attorney General’s Office issued wanted notices for 500,000 pesos for each of those involved, detailing that they face charges of attempted aggravated homicide with malice aforethought and advantage, as well as breach of legal duty.
In addition, it is detailed that the former officials have remained at large since arrest warrants were issued against them on May 26, according to reports issued by the state agency.
According to the authorities’ official statement, the incident occurred on the night of May 24, when officers Luna Delgado and Palafox López, while conducting an operation related to a previous attack on state police officers, mistook attorney Bustamante’s vehicle for that of the alleged attackers.
After the incident, the AMIC officers, according to their statement received by the Prosecutor’s Office, claimed they opened fire because they were allegedly being followed by several vehicles. This decision resulted in at least 70 bullet wounds to the complainant’s car.
According to authorities, both officers remain sought by the Sonoran police after arrest warrants were issued against them for attempted murder with aggravated treachery.
In addition to the events, authorities emphasized that at the time of the attack, there was no criminal record to justify the action, which is why the officers were declared fugitives and the warrants were formally issued two days after the incident.
As a result of the error, Carlos Bustamante was seriously injured and rushed to a Hermosillo hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to official reports.
The Prosecutor’s Office insisted that the reward offered seeks to encourage public collaboration to ensure the swift location and presentation of the now former officers to justice, with the stated objective of “guaranteeing justice and avoiding impunity in the state.”
The investigation continues with the collection of information on the whereabouts of the alleged perpetrators, while Bustamante Bracamontes’s defense team awaits progress in the judicial proceedings.
