The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Agriculture) reported a case of the Cattle Screwworm in Ezequiel Montes, Querétaro, which represents the first incidence of the parasite in this state.

Both the municipality and the state represent a key point for cattle movement in the country, due to their strategic location. Furthermore, according to estimates, 85% of the cattle arriving in the state are used to meet demand in the Valley of Mexico.

An affected animal in a shipment from the south

The case was detected during the third inspection of a shipment of cattle coming from the south-southeast. The Authorized Responsible Veterinarian (MVRA) identified a cattle with a suspicious lesion and, after an examination, confirmed the presence of GBG larvae, the Ministry of Agriculture reported.

Following the notification, personnel from the National Service of Health, Safety, and Agrifood Quality (Senasica) arrived at the site to treat the wound, collect samples for diagnosis, and apply preventative treatment with ivermectin to the remaining animals.

The authority indicated that only one of the 67 cattle in the shipment was affected by the plague.

Protocol activated to prevent spread

The Ministry of Agriculture added that the care protocol was activated to prevent the spread, deploying four brigades made up of 20 MVZs within a 40-kilometer radius.

The case in Querétaro comes days after the detection of a second case in Nuevo León. Meanwhile, the United States remains closed to Mexican cattle exports.
