A six-year-old boy was crushed to death by thousands of tons of rocks and mud that slid down a hill due to heavy rains in the town of Agua Fría de Gudiño, part of the Bucareli district of the municipality of Pinal de Amoles.
“I express my condolences and solidarity with his loved ones,” said the mayor of Pinal de Amoles, Guadalupe Ramírez, in a video message released Thursday night.
According to the official, the boy was six-year-old Mateo “N,” who was trapped in a landslide and became the first victim of the devastation wrought in Querétaro by Hurricane Priscilla.
The boy was walking with his father along the access road to the community when the landslide occurred.
The boy’s father suffered only minor injuries, but the boy was buried by the mass of mud.
Guadalupe Ramírez added that until almost midnight on Thursday, the community of Agua Fría de Gudiño remained isolated due to mud and rocks blocking access to the community.
She reported that Municipal Public Security and Civil Protection personnel from Pinal de Amoles responded to the site of the landslide to address the situation and assist in the efforts to rescue the child’s body and provide support to his family.
She added that both state and municipal authorities have urged the population to take no risks and avoid traveling through dangerous areas, especially those affected by rain and landslides.
According to Pinal de Amoles authorities, the town of Agua Fría de Gudiño is the area with difficult access conditions due to the rising waters of the river that flows through the area.
