The aroma of copal, the fresh breeze waving the confetti, and the brilliant presence of the marigold flower invite you to enjoy 140 cultural and artistic activities as part of the Day of the Dead program, the most vibrant celebration of all, which the Government of Oaxaca will hold from October 25 to November 4.
From the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, the government of Oaxaca invited Mexico and the world to visit the Cultural, Linguistic, and Gastronomic Heart of Mexico, to immerse themselves in the traditions of the Oaxacan people, who honor the memory of those who have passed away with a solemn, joyful, and colorful celebration.
The head of the federal Ministry of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, indicated that, within this framework, the arrival of more than 89,000 people and an economic impact exceeding 380 million pesos are expected.
Meanwhile, her counterpart in Oaxaca, Saymi Pineda Velasco, announced that from October 26th to November 3rd, a sand carpet will be laid in the atrium of the Jalatlaco neighborhood church, a façade competition will be held in the Historic Center of Oaxaca de Juárez, and the “Flowers that Guide the Soul” floral circuit will be held.
In addition, on October 29th, in coordination with the State DIF System, the Diverti Muertos (Diverti the Dead) will be held, and on October 30th, at 6:00 PM, the Verbena Xandú (Xandú Festival), with the participation of various agencies.
At the same time, on October 31st, the Grand Day of the Dead Parade and the Catrina Competition will take place, with awards given to the top three places. Important concerts will also be held from October 31st to November 2nd in the Alameda de León, Xochimilco neighborhood, and San Pablo Villa de Mitla at 8:00 PM.
The Director General of the Sports Institute, Arturo de Jesús Chávez, explained that the Taekwondo Tournament will take place on October 25 and 26 at the Hermanos Flores Magón Sports Complex; and the Combat Sports Festival will take place from October 26 to 29 at the Alameda de León.
The State Surfing Tournament will also be held in Puerto Escondido on October 25 and 26. Meanwhile, from November 1 to 2, the following activities will take place: Catrinas en el Mar, an Athletic Race, a Skateboarding Festival, and a Children’s Soccer Tournament, at various venues across the state.
The Secretary of Economic Development, Raúl Ruiz Robles, announced that this agency will be in charge of the Made in Oaxaca House, “Ofrenda y Herencia” edition, which will be open from October 28 to November 4 at the Real Alhóndiga de Antequera, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Likewise, the State Day of the Dead Contest, which will have four categories and 14 prizes with a prize pool of 72,000 pesos, and the Souls Market will be held from October 30 to November 2 at the Oaxaca Gastronomic Center.
The general director of the Institute of Native Languages of Oaxaca (ILEO), Víctor Cata, added that from October 31 to November 3, this agency will hold concerts, plays, and presentations alluding to this celebration. Starting on October 30, various linguistic landscapes will be exhibited on facades in the city’s Historic Center.
The Secretary of Interculturality, Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities, Juana Hernández López, explained that from October 28 to 30, Living Legends will be held, a six-performance theatrical tour in the Xochimilco neighborhood.
Camilo Martínez Ortiz, Undersecretary of Cultural and Artistic Outreach, Promotion, and Outreach of the Secretariat of Culture and Arts of Oaxaca, added that this agency will carry out more than 50 activities, distributed across 11 venues, some of them in collaboration with various municipalities.
This will also include an exhibition of more than 35 altars representing the 16 cultures of indigenous peoples and Afro-Mexicans, which will be presented in the capital’s main square.
