Although he has only a passing acquaintance with the project and the intention to build an airport in San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo Pureco said that its construction could be a long way off.
He said it’s the beginning of a project and “everything begins with the approval of the Federal and State Governments. For now, we don’t have an executive project that’s advanced enough to see its feasibility.”
If this major project, which would increase the influx of tourists to the “Best Small City in the World,” were to move forward, there are two possible locations for its installation. The first option is near the community of La Venta, between San Miguel and Dolores Hidalgo, and the other option would be near the industrial park. The mayor indicated that the federal project is certainly more advanced, but a meeting between the three levels of government has not yet taken place.
Along the same lines is the project to divert the Interurban Train, which has already begun construction and has been proposed to have a station near San Miguel de Allende. This option is viewed positively by San Miguel residents because many people work in Querétaro and would speed up travel times.
Currently, San Miguel de Allende does not have a functioning commercial airport; the existing airfield does not have one. ICAO code, and flights to the city should be directed to the nearest airports: Querétaro Intercontinental Airport (QRO) and León’s Bajío International Airport (BJX). Despite recent announcements and previous plans to develop a new airport, the project has faced a lack of progress and coordination between levels of government, leaving its future uncertain.
