The intensity of the rains caused a fracture in the ground, but rapid coordination between institutions made it possible to restore it. In less than 48 hours, Federal Highway 307—which connects Chiapas with Guatemala—was reopened to traffic after a nearly 10-meter sinkhole collapsed near the Ejido Nuevo Chihuahua, on the Benemérito–Trinitaria stretch.

The incident, which occurred on October 9, left six rural communities isolated. Plan DN-III-E was activated that same night, under the direction of the Mexican Army, in collaboration with the State Preventive Guard “Fuerza Pakal,” the Municipal Civil Protection Service, and the Benemérito de las Américas City Council, headed by Juan Gómez Morales.

For two days without interruption, more than 100 Army personnel and municipal personnel worked with shovels, picks, ropes, backhoes, and dump trucks to remove debris and fill the sinkhole with gravel and rock, ensuring temporary vehicle passage.

In the rain, temporary lighting was installed to continue the nighttime work, while the police and Civil Protection controlled traffic and maintained security in the area.

“It was a tireless effort, with the commitment to not leave our communities isolated,” said Mayor Gómez Morales, thanking the armed forces for their swift intervention.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) reported that the affected section has entered the structural repair phase to reinstall the culverts and apply the final asphalt layer.

Authorities from the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) confirmed that Plan DN-III-E will remain active as long as the rains persist, with the presence of emergency units and ongoing monitoring to prevent further collapses.

The reopening of the road restores communication and the supply of food, medicine, and fuel to border communities, in addition to reactivating commercial traffic between Chiapas and Guatemala.

The highway once again unites families and territories; it is an example of what can be achieved with coordination and a willingness to serve,” the mayor emphasized.
